We belong to a new generation of farmers. Neither Nathan nor Sarah grew up on a farm, but we both discovered it as a calling through certain readings, experiences, and intuitions. Nathan and Sarah both graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 2007. Upon graduation, Sarah moved to Los Angeles, California to serve as an immigration law paralegal in the Jesuit Volunteer Corp. Nathan took himself along the Lewis and Clark Trail via bicycle, crossing over 2000 miles and ending his journey at Holden Village in Chelan, Washington. In their respective locations, both Nathan and Sarah were learning lessons about living simply, social and environmental justice, and the importance of community.
In 2008, Nathan moved out to Southern California to be closer to Sarah and began working with farmer Peter Wilsrud at Avogadros Garden-Farm, a small CSA farm in Ojai, California. Sarah began visiting the farm and found the fresh air and soft ground she was looking for away from the urban cement life of L.A. We both began farming together and fell in love with a sense of purpose and simple giving to the land and the community through growing healthy, safe, and delicious food.
After a long morning in the lettuce and six months living together in a yurt, we decided to get married. We knew we wanted to farm together and were ready to begin setting roots down in the area we grew up in. We were then blessed with the opportunity to spend an entire season growing both vegetables and ourselves at Heartbeet Farm with farmers Joe and Becca Schwen. From spring greenhouse planting to fall pumpkin harvest we worked alongside Joe and Becca in Zumbro Falls, MN. After being married in the fall of 2009, we moved back to Decorah, Iowa.
Upon moving to Decorah in 2009, we had an opportunity to rent a few acres and start a market garden. We learned an incredible amount in our first season and are eager to continue moving forward.
We continue to learn. To grow real food. To raise healthy animals. To love one another and the land around us. We will see you at the market! |
